Fears that are keeping you stuck and how to overcome them!

Stuck? I’ve got you covered. Today we’re talking about the three fears that are keeping you from the career and life of your dreams. And I’ll also share my top tips to combat these fears head on.

 

 

In working with my career clarity clients and my ultimate career bootcampers, I’ve identified three common fears that everyone who’s going through a career transition normally experiences.

Today we’ll:

A) identify those fears
B) show you some strategies on how you can overcome those

Let’s dive right in.

The three fears:

  1. Fear of not being good enough to get the job that you want or not having the correct skill set for that particular job.
  2. Fear that what you really want to do with your life doesn’t exist.
  3. Fear that what you want to do in that profession that you’re going to be passionate about is not going to make you enough money.

These are some real and legitimate fears to have.

However, I want you to remember that whenever you are trying out something new and thinking outside of the box in your life, it will always bring up some fear in yourself.

As the author and TED speaker Elizabeth Gilbert says in her book, Big Magic, Fear is always triggered by creativity.

Having fear shows you that you’re being creative, and that you’re human and that you’re currently going through a growth phase.
How to overcome the first fear of failing or not having the correct skillset:

It’s important to know that not everything that you think is the truth. Half of your thoughts that you think on a daily basis is complete nonsense. It’s not set in stone, it’s not fact, it’s just random thoughts that you have. Having the thought “what if I fail” is just a thought as well, and it’s a negative thought at that.

80% of the things that we think on a daily basis is negative or exactly the same as what we thought yesterday.

What to do:

Shift your focus and start to thinking more positively. How do you do that?
One little trick that I often share with clients is to start playing the what if game. The what if game is a game to help you get out of catastrophe thinking. If you’re thinking what if that job doesn’t exist, what if I’m going to fail, and what if I’m not going to have the right, correct skillset to land that job, then you want to flip that and go: What if I do have the right skillset? What if that job does exist? What if I land that job? What if I know exactly who to talk to to get that job? You really flip this into a positive way, and that will shift your focus and get rid of some of that fear that you have.
How to overcome that fear of what if what I want doesn’t exist:

Here’s a new little concept that I want you to think about. If you can think it, then you can do it. It’s as Walt Disney says: “If you can dream it, then you can do it.” It’s impossible for us to have thoughts and desires if we can’t achieve them already.
How to overcome the fear of “what if I don’t make enough money in that profession:

Do your research and your homework. So often my clients will come to me and say things like, “Oh, it’s going to cost too much money,” or “Oh, I’m not going to be able to make any good salary in that industry.” Then once they do their homework, they’ll find that their assumptions were completely wrong.

This may mean that you have to think outside the box. Because in any industry there are people that are making more than enough money. You might have to get creative to increase your earning potential in certain industries.

I also advise my clients to do a budget of what their ideal life will really cost. This is extremely effective if you’ve been in a very high paying job and then think that you have to make that much money to live.
