Five steps to land a job you love – faster!

A Career transition can be incredibly daunting and overwhelming and take way longer than it should if you don’t have the right strategy. So today, I’m going to share five tips with you to help you speed up this process.

So let’s dive right in!

Spead up your career transitions with these steps:
  1. Get clear and specific on what it is that you want. You want to build what I call a non-negotiable list. This is a wish list of all the prerequisites that your job must have for you to be happy.
  2. Start doing your homework. Start to talk to people that are in the industry that you’re interested in and research some jobs that are in that industry. A lot of my clients will often tell me that, “Oh, but there are no jobs in that industry, or they’re not going to be paid enough, et cetera.” Without doing their homework. And then once they do, do the research, they find out that their assumptions were not correct at all. So, do your research.
  3. Avoid any and all negative Nancy’s. We all have those naysayers and people in our lives that tell us that something is impossible. Make sure that you limit your contact with these people while you’re going through this process. They’ll completely derail you, and then you’re not going to feel inspired to keep looking for that perfect job that will fill you up.
  4. Make sure that you break the process down into bite size little chunks. This can seem like a gigantic thing that you want to achieve, and yes, it is quite the process. But, it doesn’t have to be all that overwhelming if you break it down into manageable and actionable little steps. If you do happen to find yourself completely in over your head, just do two things that you know will bring you closer to getting that job that you want.
  5. Hire a coach. A coach will help you to get super specific and also help you to get out of your own way and overcome any of the fears and limiting beliefs that you have around this process.

And there you have it, five easy, simple strategies that you can implement right now to help you speed up the whole career transition process.

You don’t need a year off to figure out your next career move!

While working as a money broker on the forwards desk in London, my visa expired and as a result, I got an unexpected vacation back to South Africa, not knowing when I’d be able to return to the U.K.

Things were up in the air and there was no guarantee that my work visa back to England would be granted. So off to South Africa I went. I decided to use the forced time off to do some soul searching, create positive habits and really design some clear career goals for myself. My little time off turned into a 13-week long vacation.

At first, I stuck to my intention. I read a few self-help books, did some journaling, scoped out the job market and tried to network a little too. Pretty soon, however, I got caught up in the day to day, travelled, did Pilates and spent quality time with my family. All of which left me very relaxed and rested but not any closer to a clear vision of my bigger life goals.

After 13 weeks, my visa was approved and I headed back to London with the best intentions of at least staying more healthy and being less stressed. It took no more than two months for me to be right back to my stressed out, unhealthy self and still without any clarity around future career goals.

It’s like Nigel Marsh, author, and Ted Speaker says in his TEDtalk “How to make work-life-balance work”(you can watch it below): “I found it quite easy to balance life and work when I didn’t have any work.”

I have also found this to be true for my clients and friends. Quitting your job, taking a gap year, traveling in hopes that being removed from your everyday routine will somehow clear your head and help you find your passion, seldom works. Instead what normally happens is the following: You’ll run out of money and then you’ll make impulse decisions, which will get you right back into the same position of being dissatisfied with your job.

More often, the best way to figure out what your true calling is, or to overcome an obstacle, is to be right there in the mess with it, get curious about your behavior and then tackle all obstacles head on!

We don’t get wiser or grow stronger when things are easy and there are no issues to deal with. Our failures and challenges bring the best opportunities to prosper and conquer!

Prepare for a career change

Career change, are you ready for yours? I can’t even tell you how often I work with clients who are desperate to change careers because they stayed in their job too long. They’ve resisted change and turned a blind eye to the fact that they have grown out of their role and then they’re unhappy and unfulfilled.

This creates massive stress and frustration for my clients and sometimes impulsive decisions to quit their jobs!

Why does this happen:

What you resist persists and eventually, you go into catastrophe thinking of simply running away to solve the problem.

The problem with this way of living: you take yourself with you!

So unless you take the time to actually do some soul searching and really figure out:

A: Who you are
B: What you enjoy doing
C: What you’re good at
D: What your purpose are
E: And then marrying all four

 

You’ll be in many many different roles but end up in the same situation!

 

Even when you do figure all of this out you’ll have to remember that life is EVER CHANGING!

So if you’re happy in your role right now, expect and be willing to grow and accept change.

When you operate from this level you’ll know exactly when it’s time to move up and reach for that next level job and you’ll never overstay your welcome in a role or have to make desperate and impulse decisions. You’ll advance your career with purpose, intention and inevitably be more successful!

So STOP thinking that once you land a new job you’ll be happy there forever!

Start to realize: YOU WILL OUTGROW any role you have eventually due to personal changes or your own career ambition and growth.

Prepare yourself for these career changes by:

  • Starting to really hone in on what makes you happy, what is it that you want for your life and your career. (As I mentioned in my blog entry “You can do it, even Harvard said so”, early research are showing that people who are most successful and fulfilled in their careers are people who always make decisions based on what makes them happy.
  • Stop playing copycat with your peers. Get creative, break free from the normal 9-5 and dare to step into a less ordinary career if it makes you happy.
  • Always keep your linkedIn account and resume updated (you never know who’s looking for you).
  • Always connecting with interesting people in careers you respect and admire.

Fact: According to Forbes millennials will change jobs between 15-20 times during their careers.

 

That means:  Everyone, including you, will make a career transition eventually.

 

ONLY You hold the power to make it a seamless and successful transition.

In today’s entry we touch base with someone I have so much respect for. She has been a Pilates client of mine for almost 3 years and I also had the honor of being her coach as she worked through one of the biggest transitions of her life: becoming a mom and then adjusting her career to fit into her new life. She’s been a consultant for many years and more recently transitioned into her role as accountant at a rapidly growing company. Another fun fact about her is that she also recently got certified as a life coach!

If you’re an expecting Mama or a new mom, you’re going to absolutely love this interview with Leanna. She shares some extremely valuable tips with us and also tells us a little more about the results she’s experienced since signing up for coaching sessions with yours truly and the Ultimate Career Bootcamp.

Let’s dive right in!

Hanneke: What was your biggest challenge with your career after having a baby?

Leanna: The first year of work after maternity leave was full of personal ups and professional downs – I loved being a mom and having a family, but I felt like a bad employee for not working much more than 40 hours a week. I was watching the career I had worked so hard for slip away, but I wasn’t willing to sacrifice any more time with my family, and I was too exhausted to do more than I was already doing.

Over time, I realized I wasn’t going to be able to succeed in my current role while being the kind of parent and spouse I wanted to be. So, I would say my biggest challenge was understanding and embracing how becoming a mother had changed me. Then figuring out what career role would be the best fit with my new priorities.

I remember so many nights crying over the sink while I was washing and preparing the bottles for daycare the next day, and thinking, “This is so hard! I haven’t seen my son all day; he is asleep as soon as I get him home. Everyone on my team hates me because I left the office at 5. I should do some more work when I finish the bottles … but I need to eat something first, and I’m so exhausted! How do people do this? Everyone else seems to have this all under control! I’m a mess. I’m too exhausted to think about this now.

H: What tools or resources was the greatest help to overcome your new challenges as a working mother?

L: I relied on a daily meditation practice and (somewhat) regular exercise to help maintain balance and perspective through the ups and downs. The real savior was Hanneke’s life coaching though. Working with Hanneke restored my confidence in myself and my abilities, and helped me to organize my goals and make strategic plans to achieve them. Every single aspect of my life improved because of the work I did with Hanneke. It truly brought happiness to a whole new level!

H: You did my Ultimate Career Bootcamp last year. How did it help you in your job search?

L: UCB brought structure to my career planning and job search. Before I started the program, I had an idea of what I wanted to do, but that was pretty much it. Through UCB I got crystal clear about what I wanted and why – and ‘the why’ made it real for me, it anchored me to my new goals. The program took me step by step through the process, from identifying what I wanted and why, to the detailed action plan and accountability to make it my reality. When I finished UCB there were no more excuses for not living the life of my dreams because I had the plan right in front of me.

H: What’s your best advice to new working Moms?

L: My advice for new working Moms is to be gentle on yourself. Try to keep in mind that this is probably the biggest transition of your life, and it is completely natural for it to change you in a number of ways. Your priorities, your relationship, your body, your friendships, and maybe even your career goals will change, and it can all be wonderful if you’re open to it.

Also, remember you’re not alone, and you’re not the only Mom to struggle with this. Talk to other Moms. You’ll likely pick up some new mama life hacks, and you’ll feel better knowing you’re in good company. And don’t worry if the Moms you know aren’t “new Moms,” we still remember pregnancy, labor, and those first years vividly, and we’re here to sympathize with, and support you!!

H: What could your company have done to support you more?

L: There are a number of things I would have liked for my company to offer to support me as a new parent: longer maternity leave, short-term and long-term part-time schedule options, life/career coaching services, or a more flexible work schedule. The biggest problem I faced in the workplace was basic respect for being a working parent, and that can’t be immediately rectified by any special schedule or benefit services. However, providing those accommodations and services sends a strong message that the company values the parents in their workforce, and that leads to more respect throughout the workforce. It sets the tone at the top.
