Unplug & Unwind

I’m exactly one month away from my yearly visit to my family in South Africa, needless to say I’m super excited. Lots of sun, great food, wine and no cell phones!

That’s right – I leave my phone at home. This forces me to unplug and reflect. Subsequently I get ample time to do some creative planning for the year ahead.

Don’t get me wrong, I love the internet and I’m grateful to have this amazing tool to help me run my business, but every now and then I wish I could break away from all the tech stuff here in Boston too.

As we prepare to hit the madness of the holiday season with last minute tasks to wrap up before 2015 runs out, not to mention all the parties we’ll be attending, it’s needless to say things are bound to get hectic.

So I wanted to share my 3 top tips to help you unplug without having to take a trip to a remote country:

  1. Unplug at the gym: put your phone on airplane mode or leave it in the locker room. I can’t even tell you the amount of times I’m in the middle of a workout just to be interrupted by texts, emails and phone calls. This obviously has the opposite effect that I hoped my workout would have, but it also makes it less productive.
  2. Go running outside with your Ipod remember that one? I’ve been doing this a lot lately and it’s so great to really be present with nature, to see the beautiful leaves etc.
  3. Tech-less Sundays: On Sundays shut your phone off, leave it at home or put it on airplane mode. I accidentally left my phone at home a couple of Sundays ago when I was off to yoga and brunch. At first I was all freaked out about it, but then after yoga it was so great to just be present with my friend and not habitually obsessively check my phone.

    I take a walk with my dog to the park every morning and I always leave my phone at home – very rarely do I miss something during that 40 mins that needs my immediate attention. It’s a great way to start my day!

      Oh My Word Phoebe! What a great ritual – I see so many people walking their dogs with their nose in their phones, it makes me sad – cause their puppies are doing the funniest things and they’re missing it. Seeing that I’ll be getting a puppy in 2016, I’m totally going to follow your lead and leave my phone at home when I take the little fluff ball for a walk! Thank you for sharing xo

    Hanneke! I love this blog post – we’ve been trying to figure out how and when to unplug, but since we don’t have a landline, cell phones are our way of communicating. I’m going to try the tech-less Sundays and Phoebe – I also walk my pup without any tech items! It’s really good for training and just enjoying what they do!

    I traveled to Reykjavik in September and my favorite parts were the blue lagoon and the glowing green moss on the side of the streams while hiking. None of the scenery looks real, and it was so amazing to be in the presence of nature at its best….Hope you’re having a great time! xo

      Julie – I know right? This whole cell phone thing is so great and so bad all in one! I love the tech-less Sundays! I am definitely going back to the Blue Lagoon – so gorgeous! I also loved the Geysir ( the water that shoots out like a fountain). I am with you, it felt like the scenery was like something you’d find in outer space! #LOVEDIT ps- thank you for leaving a comment xo

    Love these tips, Hanneke! Thank you! I am also a big fan of unplugging during meals. Helps me to be more mindful and enjoy real conversation. My husband and I have made dinners together cell-phone free, since we saw what a big difference it made when we were completely unplugged on our honeymoon and the great conversations that sparked!

      Another great tip! Thanks Amy. I just read an article the other day on the subject of being present and enjoying a meal with friends. It makes for happier and healthier people, and yes – you guessed it: deeper & more meaningful relationships!
