April Soderstrom: Jewelry Designer & Business Owner.

Today in Soul Sister Scoop: Childhood Hobby to Savvy Business we get to know jewelry designer, April Soderstrom a little better. She is a great example of how your childhood hobby can lead to creating your savvy business! Her pieces have been featured in InStyle and People StyleWatch magazine. April turned her childhood hobby into a creative and successful business. Be sure to read right to the end to see April’s pieces and to get two exciting opportunities from me!

Today she shares a little of her passion with us, gives us some great tips to remember and gets real about what it’s really like to be a small business owner.

I first met April at our first Pilates with Purpose event last Fall. And since then I’ve fallen in-love with her jewelry. I simply couldn’t wait to introduce you ladies to April and her collection!

Let’s dive right in shall we?

Hanneke: How did you get into the jewelry making business?

April: I’ve always loved jewelry and photos from my childhood can attest to the fact that by age two I was already loading the bangles up to my elbows and by five I’d started wearing my Mrs. Potato Head earrings around the house. I used to sell seed bead necklaces in middle school for $3 a piece, they used to take me forever! Thankfully my understanding of time+cost =price has grown with age.

In 2011 I officially started April Soderstrom Jewelry. One of my closest friends works in accessories PR and had been urging me take my hobby seriously. I finally stuck my toe in the water, got a small website up and running, started only wearing my jewelry, and saw things really start to come together in about a year and a half.

H: Your pieces are so beautiful and you make them yourself! How do you spark your creativity?

A: Thank you! I love the materials…the gemstones, chains, beads, etc. If I find something I’m instantly drawn to, I buy it, and figure it out later. I’ve come to realize this is how my creativity works best – not to mention the fastest. My ideas click when everything I need is arms distance away, so if I happen to lose a little money here and there buying too many materials, it’s all gained back in making my creation time faster.

H: What’s been your biggest success so far?

A: The moments we small business owners live for! Last fall I was inducted into the Rockford High School Hall of Fame. I had been voted most artistic by my graduating class of around 600 students so it was really a special moment to find out that 10+ years later the Board of Education in my Michigan hometown had been following my career closely and thought I deserved the Hall of Fame honor. There was an entire weekend of events and activities surrounding the ceremony. I spent a day talking with students, was honored at a football game (not quite homecoming queen but I’ll take it!), and there was a beautiful dinner event to top it off. I was on cloud nine the entire weekend and came back to Boston with a renewed energy for my business, my art, and an even better appreciation for where it all came from.

H: What do you love most about working for yourself?

A: I love the project of owning a small business. Yes, it’s exciting to hit a goal or check something off the to do list, but I really enjoy the process and planning along the way. Watching my company grow from a shoebox of materials to an entire studio full of tools, stones, and all things jewelry has been incredibly rewarding and there’s still so much more to do!

H: What’s one little tip you’d give anyone who wants to start their own business?

A: Figure out what you love to do, what your hobbies are, and how you like to spend your free time…and if you can translate one of those things into a way to make a living you’re going to be starting on the right track.

I love April’s last answer – this is part of what I do with my clients in our coaching sessions. We dive back to childhood hobbies and activities they loved. Somewhere in there is the answer to what you’ll be doing next with your career! Pay close attention to those memories, they’ll lead you to your next adventure!

Now I’d love to hear from you in the comments below:  What did you love to do when you were younger? Would you or did you also turn it into your business? Leave a comment below and tell us all about it. Be sure to check out April’s jewelry here, I absolutely adore the featherweight earrings.

Even Forbes gives 7 reasons why you should join my Mastermind!

One of the hardest things about being in business for yourself is staying motivated and knowing what the right course of action is to grow your business.

Being your own boss can be very isolating and overwhelming. But it doesn’t have to be. With a small group of hand selected ladies and a business coach at your fingertips who meet bi-weekly to help you brainstorm and discuss topics that are specifically tailored towards your business needs, you can grow your business significantly, while still maintaining balance and joy!

This is exactly what happens in my Savvy Success Masterminds.

Forbes agree that you should join this mastermind! Here are their seven reasons why you must have a mastermind group at your fingertips:

“1. You’ll be part of an exclusive community. Participating in a mastermind typically involves you being invited by the members or going through an application process. The other members need you just as much as you need them, so the quality of experience and knowledge is crucial to all involved.

2. Advisement. Once you are engaged in a mastermind, that feeling of “being alone” while running your business is gone. The other members of the group turn into business advisors of sorts and vice versa.

3. Collaboration is the name of the game. You may find someone in the group that is a perfect fit to work on a project with you. Or, you may be the perfect person to help another member as well. The group works together collaboratively, to achieve more together.

4. Extend your network. Joining a mastermind expands your network exponentially and rapidly. If you are in business, you know how important your network is. By participating in a mastermind, you instantly add to your network and typically gain the networks of those in the group with you.

5. New learning. Everyone in the mastermind is unique in skill, experience, and connections. By interacting and sharing your challenges, it’s almost certain that someone in your mastermind will have a solution for you and you may also be able to offer a solution, connection or tactic to help another in the group.

6. Cross-promotion. When you join a mastermind, you will most likely find ways to help each other by utilizing cross promotion. Finding ways to help each other through promoting to your respective networks.

7. Think bigger. Being in a mastermind will truly give you a Master Mind! You can’t help but think bigger and stretch beyond your boundaries when surrounded by amazing people doing amazing things.” ~FORBES

How to land your perfect next position: Part 3

Sometimes it’s super hard to figure out what your next position should be. If you’ve been stuck in your current position for a long while, chances are you’ve completely forgotten what you thrive on and what you’re good at.

In the 3rd part of my “How to land your perfect next position” video series I share a few tips on how to become unstuck.

I’ll also let you in on all the tips I used to figure out that I wanted to become a life coach! That’s right, it took me quite a while to figure out that I wanted to become a life coach in addition to a Pilates instructor. It’s so easy to get overwhelmed by the entire process of what you want to do next.

Watch the video now.

As always, please tell me what tips were useful to you. And if you’ve ever found yourself in a similar situation, how did you figure out what you wanted to do next?

Positive or negative: It’s your choice.

A few months ago my skin was totally acting up. As in, “Hello again, teenage acne!” I had been to a few dermatologists, spent $400 on prescriptions, and still the nasty intruders kept showing up to have a little party on my face.

Fed up, I turned to Google and discovered much more than I had been looking for. I found this thought-provoking sentence that got me thinking about much more than just clear skin.

“Let’s get real: Strategy really means nothing if you don’t have the mindset to back it up.”

That came from “The Love Vitamin,” a blog by Tracy Raftl, who teaches women how to heal their skin naturally.

Bingo, Tracy. You can have all the plans and tools in the world and come up with all the necessary action steps. But if you’re not in the right frame of mind, you won’t achieve a thing. There are also studies that suggest about 70 to 80 percent of our daily thoughts are negative.

But how on earth do you sustain a positive mindset that’s also focused?

Here are my top three tools to combat negativity and achieve anything you dream of:

1.   Meditate. Taking only 10 minutes a day to be quiet and center and ground yourself works wonders to move you to a headspace conducive to success.
2.   Be grateful. Rather than think about what you don’t have, focus on what you do have and appreciate those gems. “Trade your expectations for appreciation, and your whole world changes instantly.” – Tony Robbins
3.   Stop talking smack. Lose the gossip and hurtful talk about others. Instead, praise people more for their achievements. When you give compliments and you see how much people appreciate them, you, too, will instantly feel happier and more positive.

Remember: “ We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” – Aristotle

Oh, and my skin? It’s much better now, thanks to a few supplements recommended by “The Love Vitamin”: more water and sleep.

Now I’d love to here from you: what are your top tips to combat negativity? Leave your comments below!
