How to Be As Successful As Marie Forleo

Hello There Listeners and welcome back to the Savvy Business Show. 

It’s B-School time again and the interwebs and your inbox are BUZZING and flooded with everything about the program.

If you’re new to Marie Forleo and her B-School program, here’s a quick rundown: Marie Forleo is an American life coach, motivational speaker, author and web television host of Marie TV.

She is the owner of Marie Forleo International, B-School and MarieTV.

B-School is her 8-week program that helps entrepreneurs to build online businesses. It’s intense with a TON of information.

I took it in 2014 when I had no idea how to market and I did find it helpful, however – if you’re a seasoned business owner I wouldn’t recommend you buying it, rather invest the money and hire people who already know how to do all of it.

Thousands of people have taken it and the last time I heard Marie talking about it she said she has sold over $40 million worth of coaching packages/courses, etc.

SO why should you care!? Well having followed Marie for the last 6 years, I’ve noticed quite a few things that she does SO RIGHT and has lead to her success and it’s also these very things that she does so RIGHT that I see other business owners do wrong. 

Now it’s important to note that there is a lot of things that she’s done right (and we also have to remember that there was also a little bit of being at the right place at the right time with the right idea involved.)

But today I’m going to specifically focus on THREE things that she’s done that will greatly help you in your business too.

1: Leveraging Her Network

From interviewing big names like Tony Robbins, Mama Gina, and Brene Brown to using her clients to spread the word about her programs.

Marie Forleo has used the living daylights out of her network which has helped her to build her empire.

I often see business owners overlook their own network and refraining from incentivizing their clients to help them spread the word about their business. 

Marie Forleo understands the power of word-of-mouth, and although it seems like all of this is happening online when you break it down, it really is just a very good referral system.

She has an affiliate program where affiliates can earn money for referring others.

Ways that you can adapt this for your business: 

Instead of money – send thank you cards, or a thank you gift. 

And when was the last time you went through your connections and took a look at who they knew and who were in their networks?

Go ahead and get on it and ask these people for their help – and remember to reward them with a thank you gift too!

2: Being Consistent

Another one of Marie’s qualities is her ability to be consistent. I’ve personally been at an event where we hammered this one home.

She famously said if you don’t hear from her via her newsletter on a Tuesday to assume that she’s dead!

Being consistent helps you in business in a variety of ways:

1 – It builds trust with your customers, knowing that they can rely on you.

Trust is probably the MOST important component to build a successful business.

2 – Consistency also builds momentum.

Since 2011 (I believe that was the year that she started B-school and by the way in case you think she was an overnight success  – she started her coaching business on the side in 1999, which makes her an overnight success 10 years in the making.)

And since then she has showed up every single year building and building and building on the foundation of what she started.

How to make this work in your business:

What can you do to help clients trust your business more? Perhaps this means highlighting your experience and credentials more?

Is what you have in place right now to support clients sustainable and scalable? i.e. – can you keep up the quality and level of service as your clients increase? This is a crucial point to help you to stay consistent.

It’s also important to note that if you are lacking clarity, have underlying doubts, fears or stories that are not aligned with your goals/success then it will greatly sabotage your ability to be consistent.

So be sure to reach out to a coach to help you overcome these.

I personally spend a lot of time helping clients to gain clarity and to overcome these fears and doubts to help them to take consistent action and that’s when they see momentum build and huge growth spurts in their business.

3: Focus On The Thing

For the last 9 or 10 years, Marie Forleo has focused on THE THING! And she’s designed everything in her business to feed into that one thing. Everything in her business serves a purpose and leads to her big offering B-school.

So what she’s done is scale effectively.

This is where I see a lot of business owners fail. I see a lot of business owners who want to scale add additional revenue streams that don’t fit into their business model. This creates more work and headaches.

I also see a lot of business owners try to monetize EVERYTHING they do (including their hobbies.) This again leads to chaos, working harder for a low rate of return and ultimately also losing their joy and passion.

So let’s do a quick breakdown of Marie’s business:

1 – Marie TV

This serves as a place for people to get to know Marie, which helps the know, like, and trust factor needed to convert sales AND it also serves as a way to grow her newsletter and gives her audience an easy place to share with their friends (i.e. referring her to others easily.)

2 – Her Book “Everything is Figureoutable”

Although I was personally disappointed with the book as I was hoping to get some new insights into Marie the person, again THIS WAS NOT the purpose for writing the book.

The purpose of this book was to give a wider range of people access to her so they could get to know and like her AND then eventually convert to buy her courses.

3 – Her courses Copy Cure + How to Start the Right Business

Both serve as perfect tasters of what you could get from her ultimate big offer B-School.

So how can you adapt this to your business:

When you look at all the things your business has to offer, do they all align and fit in?

Denise Duffield-Thomas has a saying all roads lead to Bootcamp ( which is her big course that she sells.)

So ask yourself: Do all roads in my business lead to making that sale?

You don’t have to have a course or be a service-based business to do this.

What you really want to look at here as that everything in your business is set up to get your customer closer to giving you their money. i.e. making a sale.

When you bring all three of these steps together, it makes for an incredible business strategy!

3: Focus on the revenue-producing thing

Today’s Savvy Business Show talks about exploring this topic along with why it’s crucial to start thinking like a CEO long before you think you’re ready. 

Let’s dive in…

I get this question quite often. Usually when this question gets asked it’s asked from a place of doubt, uncertainty. 

Traditionally when we think of CEOs we think of big stuffy board rooms and men in suits  – with MBAs, decades of experience and more.

INTIMIDATING. No wonder so many women I work with feel a little uneasy calling themselves CEOs. 

Ok so back to the old boys club in suits… no, you don’t have to become one of them at all. 

And I completely get why it’s so intimidating to call yourself the CEO of your business as well – after all – you may not be running a Fortune 500 company (yet)…

So how dare you call yourself a CEO  – right? Right? — urm nope. 

See here’s the deal. In business, there is this definitive point where in order to grow and scale further, you MUST graduate to being the CEO of your company. 

Before this stage – you can still get away with being the workhorse – have a hand in everything and pretty much run your business the way you did when you started.

You can be the Chief Everything Officer in this phase.

And, then there’s that tipping point – where you have to start to work and think completely different in order to kick things up and make a leap to the next level in business. 

At this phase of business, you have to let go of doing everything, hire the right talent, learn to let go and delegate better, work on your leadership skills and start to do and show up very differently in your business.

This is what I call the graduation to Chief Executive Officer in your business. 

And this stage will test you  – this is the part where you have to strive to show up wanting to be a better person than yesterday every day.

Here you shift from being the workhorse to being the show pony – supporting your staff to execute and achieve the vision that you have for your business. 

At this level  – you have to shift from always grinding and hustling to working with more ease and joy.

Reserving your energy so you can expand your business exponentially without burning yourself out. 

That’s why CEOs do. 

So the good news is that you never have to call yourself a CEO if you don’t want to BUT you DO however have to start thinking, acting and BEING like a CEO in your business. 

And this isn’t the easiest of transitions to make. 

A lot of people have a very hard time letting go of all those to-dos and tasks they did for years – and I get it.

It’s difficult to trust others who are new to your business to do the job that you can now do in your sleep.

Hiring the right people and training others can be time-consuming and feel very difficult. 

That’s why it’s so important to invest in help at this phase of your business.

Because you’re about to go from working in your business all the time to working ON it a whole lot – which means there is no one around at YOUR EXECUTIVE level in your business who will truly understand or be able to give constructive growth-oriented feedback.

That’s exactly where one of my Savvy CEO Clients found herself last year before investing to work with me, she says:
