Building your resiliency

Building your resiliency

Today’s, Savvy Business Show talks about offering three strategies to building your resiliency.

It’s been an incredibly crazy few weeks – as one of my clients put it – it feels like we’ve lived multiple lifetimes from one day to the next while the magnificent scope of the impact of the COVID-19 virus settled in on us.  Today I offer three strategies to build your resiliency.

Let’s dive in…

As a business owner, I’m sure you’ve had so many disruptions to plans, you’ve had to pivot, adjust and adjust your plans again. Putting out a million fires daily to help you, your team and your clients during this uncertain time.

And I’m sure  – all of this has resulted in copious amounts of stress, worry, and most likely overwhelming and sometimes debilitation fear. And it’s all so understandable.

And it’s important that we not only give ourselves permission to feel all of our emotions at this moment -I know I’ve personally felt a ton of emotions ranging from grief, sadness, anger -. Because right now – more than ever it’s super important for you to be as grounded as you can possibly be. When we are grounded we are better equipped to lead others and to make better decisions.

Right now you have to lean into resiliency more than ever before.

So how do we get grounded and how do you become more resilient? In today’s episode, I’m going to share a few things that will help you become better at both.

1 – FEEL ALL YOUR FEELINGS:

No matter what you’re feeling right now – it’s all NORMAL. SO allow yourself to feel it. By allowing ourselves to feel our feelings we’re better able to process things and also it allows us to let the energy flow through us vs getting stuck somewhere.

Sometimes it helps to physically move your body to allow the feelings to flow through you – so go for a walk, or do an exercise class at home.

Doing this will both reduce stress and induce your body with endorphins that will help reduce stress.

And it’s important that we not only give ourselves permission to feel all of our emotions at this moment – but it’s also important that we put strategies in place to cope with it.

Make sure you distance yourself from things that cause extra stress right now.

2 – MAKING PEACE THAT YOU’RE NOT IN CONTROL:

If there’s one thing that the last few weeks have really driven home it’s this:

WE DO NOT HAVE CONTROL OVER EVERYTHING.

Now, this is nothing new, of course.

Ironically we have been happily sitting on a rock that’s going a million miles a minute around an explosive sun for billions of years, and on this rock that we call earth disease, ice ages, wars have always happened, pretending that we have so much control.

But the truth is there are some things  – like the rise and setting of the sun and the moon, the seasons, and now – STRESSING COVID-19 – that we have no control over.

SO how do we stay grounded when we are not in control!? We have to surrender that which we do not have control over and take responsibility and action for that which we do have control of.

Here’s an exercise to help you do this:

Write out all your fears: then go through and ask yourself: do have I have control over this or not?

If the answer is not – then practice letting go and surrendering that fear to a higher power.

One way of doing this is to say a  mantra-like:

I release this problem or fear of a higher power and trust that it will all work out.

For the fears that you do have control over: what action can you or do you have to take to overcome the obstacle?

3: WHAT ARE THE THINGS THAT FILL YOUR CUP?

Our immediate knee jerk reaction when things get tough is to deprive ourselves of all the fun and nice things that fulfill us. And this is the BIGGEST mistake that you as a business owner and any human, really, can make in testing times.

Right now it’s crucial that you protect your businesses’ biggest asset: YOU – that means keep making time for hobbies, exercise, enough sleep.

If you’re not sure or can’t remember what those things are right now, start with something small – like taking a walk daily or doing a little gratitude list at the end of the day, taking a bath.

It can also help to think of things that you always say you’ll do in future – like when I accomplish x, then I’ll make time to_____ (what’s that blank for you!?) Do that  -if it’s possible now.

Think of things that usually relax you and make a list that you can do daily!

For me it’s the following:

I wake up at the same time every day and I meditate for 10 minutes and journal for a little bit. Then I make myself a nice cup of coffee and I write – writing brings me joy.

After that, I go for a 30-minute walk and only then I start my day.

Right now – while social distancing is in effect, I check in with a friend every afternoon.

My hubby and I take another walk with our pup in the late afternoon.

And then I cook a healthy meal and we watch something fun and light on TV.

I also sprinkle in weekly baths here, listen to music often and try to do something creative around the house.

DOing all of the above helps me stay as calm as possible in these trying times.

How to Grow Credibility and Visibility Fast in Your Business?

How to Grow Credibility and Visibility Fast in Your Business?

Today, on the Savvy Business Show I talk with Alessandra Pollina about how to gain credibility and visibility fast in your business. Alessandra is a member of the Savvy Business Masterminds.

Alessandra has been part of the Mastermind community for the last year now and over this year Alessandra has hit so many amazing milestones in her business.

Her success includes finally cracking the elusive six-figure revenue mark, rented her first full-time office space, she also expanded her team and hired her first employee.

Alessandra holds a bachelor of science in communications from Boston University’s College of communications. Throughout her college years, she held many internships in the PR field at some of the best agencies in Boston.

This vast array of experiences became the foundation of Alessandra’s PR career and positioned her to launch her own company, Pollina PR + Marketing, a full-service boutique PR and marketing agency, in 2012 at just 23 years old.

Alessandra also loves to work one on one with business owners to train them on the tactics, strategy, and implementation best-practices for carrying out their own PR and marketing.

She’s also the founder of the Female Millennial Entrepreneurs Boston networking group and she also launched The Female Millennial Entrepreneur Podcast in 2019.

Let’s dive in…

In the entrepreneurial world, people tend to follow around a little bit before they realize what’s best for them.

Sometimes I say this to people that we think, it’s so much pressure to decide what to do and there’re so many things we might enjoy doing or wanting to do, but make a conscious decision, pick something and stick with it.

Sometimes we all like doing stuff a little bit here and there but when it comes to my business, I stay pretty consistent, as I was able to build it into something.

Who are my clients?

  • Clients are mostly from small to mid-sized businesses
  • It’s a LOT more about people you’re working with and not the type of businesses you’re catering to
  • Enjoying who you’re working with is more important than which business they belong to
  • Constraining to some specific type becomes frustrating – marketing one-on-one, right there for everyone
  • It all boils down to what clients want, what they want out of it and where I specialize in what I provide them, a lot more than I specialize in working with this type of client.

What do I do for my clients?

  • Media relations side of things – media outreach for clients
  • PR and marketing services

How do you talk to people who say: “yeah PR….., I’ve heard about it and that I’m never quite sure if it’s worth it” – how would you explain or speak to someone like that on the fence of the value of PR?

I try explaining:
  • It helps build your reputation so well and so fast because
  • If you’re getting yourself out there, people are seeing and hearing about whatever you do and that you exist for them to be reached out to
  • It helps to reach out to your target audience
  • PR helps you to get in front of much wider audiences in less of a targetted way like you’re not emailing a specific list of people who’ve already found you and signed up for something
  • It also helps build credibility especially online through the links wherever you’ve been featured
  • Clients and consumers can find you while researching online and can refer to others also building a web of connections around you

There are other ways easier to do yourself which is faster to carry out too like getting yourself out through a podcast, post to a website or editorial or letter to the editor or newspaper or something like that….. it’s like something you’ve actually created and you’re placing it somewhere else which is even one step further than content marketing.

Some other PR ways to reach out

  • If you’re a local business like for pilates or something, one could partner with other local brands and put on an event together in a way where you’re essentially sharing lists or audiences where you reach out to their audience and vice versa
  • Any time when your business or your company or yourself is interacting with your public which can be anybody or anything to do with like if you’re a big company, investor relations, employee relations, customer relations fall under that and not just selling or marketing stuff

When its time to hire a PR agency?

  • When it becomes too much time consuming and that you can afford to hire someone
  • There’s a need to build relationships and maintain consistency
  • When you know reaching out to people is not your forte and not something you enjoy doing the most and that you also don’t have the bandwidth for it

How the DIY PR COURSE helps people?

  • It’s a step-by-step process like creating your media kit, how will you be presenting your business, what you want to be promoting
  • Instead of overwhelming your audience, it encourages you to pick up only two or maybe three things that are your messages for the next six months or so – you don’t need a ton of different messages and pitches
  • Keep it as simple as possible
  • Doing yourself is sometimes best as you’re going to be providing a real personalized pitch than somebody else is putting it out for you

My Recent Cancer Scare

My Recent Cancer Scare

Before I share today’s episode I want to make it abundantly clear that I hate being dramatic so even talking about this is totally uncomfortable for me because other people are not so lucky to have it just be a scare… and if you’re one of those people or you have a family member who’s currently fighting cancer – know that I’m sending so much love to you and your family.

I didn’t share this as it was happening as I deeply believe in processing and digesting things first before you share it all out to the world. In my opinion, when we do this we are of better service to others.

SO in today’s episode, I want to share how processing this scare has influenced my business.

Let’s dive in…

Hello There Listeners and welcome back to the Savvy Business Show.

When we look at the online business world and what they teach it’s all the sexy shiny “make your first 6 figures in 60 days” Or Your blue-print to 7 figures now! …

And I get it… that’s the sexy stuff, the “cool marketing strategies”

But the reality of the matter is that a sustainable and profitable business takes WAYYY more than just sexy marketing, a funnel or drip campaign… it involves way more than converting clients and making sales…

And the online #girlboss #bossbabe rah-rah world NEVER talks about the rest…

And I get it  – it’s not sexy… but this stuff that they’re not discussing is CRUCIAL to building concrete and solid business.

SO what does all this have to do with my recent cancer scare?

You see I grew up with a dad who worked in the debt collection side of a bank for a while. This is the department that goes to repossess people’s belongings.

My dad had some funny stories of people shooting at them when they would go to give notice that things would be repossessed. But he also had some very sad stories of widows who lost everything because their husband died and they didn’t have insurance….

Hence when my husband asked if he could marry me – my dad’s first question before giving him permission was:” Do you have life insurance!?”

The thing is we never know when we’re going to get that scare that turns into real bad stuff…

So when I received my scary news back in May 2019 – it immediately made me think of all the things in my business that’s been on my to-do list ( but because they’re not sexy to do had been pushed to the back burner…)

A lot of the processes and foundational work in my business have already been set up pretty well – but there was one big loophole for me and that was disability insurance and a life insurance policy for myself.

Running a business is a risky business as it is  – so making sure that everything’s set up to support and keep you as safe as possible is really important for you to be able to then do the “sexy” business stuff with more confidence and ease.

SO what in your business isn’t bulletproof yet?

Have you tightened up your contracts, health insurance, do you have an operations manual?

Can your team continue to run with things when you are not there?

Are all the passwords to everything available somewhere for team members?

What do you have to take care of now so you can have peace of mind? Take action now  – trust me it’s going to make you feel so supported and safe and will then help you to grow a successful business with a strong foundation.
