How I wrote a book in 90 days – Part 2

How I wrote a book in 90 days – Part 2

Welcome back to part 2 of the 4 strategies that helped me write a book in under 90 days!

As I mentioned in the first section of this two-part series, I wanted to take you behind the scenes to show you what it took to write this book.

I know that you have big goals too, and so I wanted to share this journey to you, to inspire and motivate you to achieve YOUR big ambitions too!

Click here to read Part 1 where I share two crucial steps that helped bring clarity to my creative process and got me to finally start and finish a book I’ve been trying to write since 2017.

After implementing those two strategies, I did the following to further help me focus and stay accountable.

3: It’s all in the table of contents

Being the little aquarian that I am, I like to walk to the beat of my own drum. And I don’t like following conventional constraints. In my creative process, I like to leave things as open as possible to adjust and change plans when I see fit.

That was also the approach I took in the past when I wanted to write this book. Yep, I have actually been sitting on several book ideas, none of which came to fruition, for various reasons. One of those reasons was that I never had a structured and detailed enough table of contents.

But thanks to my editor, I was able to pull my aquarian creative process together with a more structured format.

Once I had a detailed table of contents the book practically wrote itself.

4: Set aside time and know yourself

The process started off a little scattered. I wrote the first chapter of this book in the L.A. airport while waiting for a delayed flight in December.

I planned out the table of contents in South Africa over a couple of days, spending an hour or so a day on it. And I think I wrote three chapters down there as well.

Once I was back at home in Massachusettes, I decided to set aside time in the morning and committed to writing for 60 – 90 minutes at least five days a week.

I also wrote a few times over the weekends but I never wrote more than 3 hours a day.

Why? Because I wanted this process and experience to be FUN! Something that I would never have thought was possible back when my friend first suggested I wrote a book back in 2016.

“When you understand the intricate workings of your personality and how your body interconnects with your soul, it unlocks a whole new dimension of what’s possible for you to achieve.” ~ excerpt from Chapter 12 in the first draft of my book.

Once again, applying one of the strategies I share in the book, I was able to work with myself and work faster and with more ease! And the best part: I NEVER had one day of writers’ block ever!

How to make the best business decisions

How to make the best business decisions

Today’s, Savvy Business Show talks about how to beat the overwhelm and make the best business decisions.

There’s been a theme that has consistently been coming up in all sessions with clients since the start of the pandemic.

Naturally, most people are feeling overwhelmed at the moment, there are so many decisions to be made  – but which one will be the best one for your business?

That’s what we’ll uncover in today’s episode: how to beat the overwhelm and make the best business decision right now.

Let’s dive in…

On any given day there are lots of decisions for you as a business owner to make and right now there are a million more. The landscape of what we’re dealing with’s changing so fast it’s sometimes hard to keep up.

So, I wasn’t surprised when one session after another was all about helping the to decide the best steps forward.

The decisions you’re making right now will greatly impact your relationship with clients and your employees. And obviously these two relationships are the most important ones in business, why?

If you don’t have strong trustworthy relationships with clients, you don’t have a business.

And if you don’t have that very same relationship with your employees – it will directly impact the quality of their work  – which of course will trickle down to your bottom line too.

So how do you make the best decisions for your business right now while simultaneously keeping all these valuable relationships intact?

You’ll be happy to know that that boils down to one simple thing.

A concrete and solid beacon, that will remain unshakeable no matter what.

And that one thing is this:

YOUR BUSINESSES MISSION STATEMENT

When prepped correctly, your mission statement sums up your fundamental values.

It informs how you operate in every situation.

Let’s take my mission statement as an example:

A results-driven company that acts from a place of kindness, courage, and integrity.

Providing a safe and co-creative space. Delivering transformational services of the highest standards and quality. Helping business owners to become confident leaders and CEOs working with ease and joy (working less, earning more)

So if  we grab my values from  this statement it’s

Kindness,  Courage, Integrity, Quality

Coming back to these values before I do anything in my business helps me to be able to trust myself and my actions.

I can put any decision I have to make through this filter and trust that it will be the best decision for my business.

For example: how to have a difficult conversation with a client or employee right now,  how to go about creating buzz about my book without coming off as tone-deaf.

All of these decisions are put through my values filter first: Kindness,  Courage, Integrity, Quality

Even when fear is fogging my judgment,  coming back to this statement will act as my true north. Thus helping me to be able t o TRUST MY GUT.

How has coming back to values helped my clients:

1. It’s helped them decide if the pivot they’re making to adjust to current circumstances is in alignment with who they are as a business. Companies who have not taken a second to go back to their values are the ones that you’re seeing that are offering stuff that is confusing to you right now.

2. It’s also helped them to communicate effectively with their clients and employees  – which has strengthened the faith in businesses. Again the companies whom you are seeing with completely tone-deaf marketing right now are the ones who are not acting from their values.

A very beautiful example of a big company who recently did some marketing that was so aligned with who they are: VISTA PRINT when you google them the following comes up: Vistaprint empowers small businesses like yours to market themselves effectively.

They recently created a beautiful inspirational video where they encouraged people to buy gift cards from small businesses — again beautifully aligned with their mission. And now when you got to their site they Vistaprint has partnered with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation to create the Save Small Business Fund – a grant opportunity to help keep qualified small businesses afloat during this pandemic.

3. It’s helped my clients trust their own gut which has strengthened their confidence and has made them more resilient, which  means that they’ve been able to move forward despite incredibly difficult

I strongly believe that if you don’t

So if you’re feeling overwhelmed right now, go back to your mission statement.

Maybe it’s time to review it. Do that now!

A special gift for you:

I also have a very special gift for you today that will further help you to lead from your values with more confidence. As you know – I’m currently going through the editing process of my first book. How I wrote a book in 90 days – Part 1

How I wrote a book in 90 days – Part 1

That’s right! I wrote a BOOK! And I’ve decided to take you on the behind the scenes journey that leads to this miracle I once thought would not be possible.

But before I share more on how I wrote a book in 90 days, a mission impossible cum miracle.

I do want to acknowledge that now is a hard time for A LOT of people. The idea of celebrating something may feel completely wrong or may fill you with guilt. You may even think: “Hanneke – really!? How tone-deaf can you be!?”

I hear you. I sat with that guilt for quite a bit before sending this email.

It took me back to my morning walk today. I spotted a nurse in a parking lot, walking to work and I immediately started clapping for her. I completely caught her by surprise and it brought a huge smile it to her face as she walked into her office. That, in turn, brought tears to my eyes.

And it solidified something big for me: my role now (and always) is to inspire and be a beacon of hope when others can’t see it. That’s the vision I hold for my clients and that’s the space I hold for you too.

I’m here to inspire and give hope – despite the hardships and odds we face. I am here to allow you to feel whatever you need, and then help you find the solution that’s gonna get us out of this mess.

AND that’s why I wanted you to share in this celebration with me.

My hope is that what I’m about to share with you, will inspire you too.

Here’s how I know my news can do that for you: When we see others do big things, it pulls us into action to do big, scary, and hard things in our own lives as well. Other’s accomplishments inspire and motivate us – when we choose for it to do that for us.

May my celebration be that source for you today.

Ok, ready to celebrate?

Today’s blog entry is the first of a two-part series where I take you behind the scenes of how I wrote this book so darn quickly!

I remember the day back in 2014 when I told one of my closest friends in Boston that I was going to get my coaching certification. She was so excited for me and told me that just that morning she had been watching the morning show and they were interviewing a life coach who had written a book.

“You’re going to write one too!” She declared.

I immediately felt my insides contract. Me? I suck at writing. There’s no way that I’ll be able to write a full-blown book – EVER.

It turns out that limiting belief that I had about myself and my abilities were completely false!

Not only, did I write a book, but I did it in under 90 days while traveling to South Africa for three weeks, and Florida for five days. I wrote while still running my business, and serving clients full time. And during the last month of writing the pandemic was in full swing, by then writing became my happy escape from it all, and that helped to finish it in record time.

So, how did I do it!?

Through the powerful toolkit that I’ve amassed since hiring my first life coach over 13 years ago, and the coaching expertise I gained when I became a certified coach. Yup, I used all of the strategies I use daily with clients on myself. It’s also the very process I share in my book! It helped me stay as focused as I could be and as a result, I was able to finish the first draft of my book in under 90 days.

And here are TWO of the FOUR ingredients that helped me write a book in 90 days:

1: I made a commitment to myself.

This is actually the very first step in the process that I share in my book too. When you commit to doing whatever it takes to overcome obstacles, you empower yourself to do the hard things. The things that you once thought would be completely impossible. Which for me was writing a book!

“that’s what makes the commitment even more important, without the commitment to do whatever is necessary to achieve your goal, you won’t get up and face the music. You won’t do the hard things. You won’t stand up for yourself.

Making this commitment will help you to expand into your fullest creative potential while you’re here on earth. You’re here to grow and achieve everything that you’re capable of.“

~ an excerpt from Chapter 1 in my first draft of the book

And as I explain in my book, that process starts with a very clear commitment to yourself.

I committed to writing a book no matter what tin 2020.

2: Get a good editor

Back when I was still running my Pilates business, I had the pleasure of meeting a music critic at the Boston Globe, who became a very close friend over the years. And he ended up being my editor for a while when I first started blogging and writing newsletters.

When I had the idea to write a book, I immediately knew that I wanted him to be my editor.

My book is a combination of a memoir that meets self-development books, and due to the very personal and vulnerable stories I share, I knew that I would want someone who knew me to be my editor.

So at the end of 2020, I sat across from my friend, who has since become an editor at The Los Angeles Times, who had immediately agreed to help me when I called him. Over a very L.A. brunch, the two of us brainstormed the framework of the book.

How To Lead with More Confidence Now

How To Lead with More Confidence Now

Two things to help you lead with ease

I’ve had many conversations with clients and business owners over the last few weeks and one thing became very clear. Everyone is experiencing various levels of EXHAUSTION, Overwhelm, with periods of freak-out and we’re all going to be ok in between.

Right now – everyone is OVERLOADED with information and hardcore business strategies of how to go digital faster, how to get funding, etc. With this information OVERLOAD, all of my clients have expressed how little bandwidth they have at the moment. BECAUSE everyone is strategizing like a champ already! You already have/know of or are applying all the BUSINESS strategies to handle this situation.

    BUT SOMETHING IS MISSING!

That something is strategies to help you ground, focus, lead with ease. This falls under the mindset category.

For this very reason that I will not be delivering any content on social media or here that is more information about things/strategies to DO. Of course, if that’s what YOU need right now – I’m more than happy to hop on a private call with you and brainstorm the living daylights out of ideas with you while helping you to stay in possibility land.

It’s my intention to help ground and focus you during this time so you can continue to lead your business and team with ease and confidence.

How do I know this is needed? Because this is what I’ve been helping every client do right now, and you know what the results have been?

They’ve come up with crazy innovative ideas, they’ve been able to take massive action, and execute those plans in record time. Some of them have even gained new clients.

So that’s why it’s important that you have these tools in your mindset toolkit too.

Today I’m going to share two quick and easy ways to help you tap back into both ease and confidence by asking yourself the following:

What do you need right now at this very moment?

I’ve personally been doing this every day. Remember that right now – I’m having to hold the space for people who are freaking out and unloading on me EVERY DAY. In order to help and guide them to come up with the very best innovative solutions that will help their business not only survive in the short run but thrive in the long run, I need to show up grounded and calm.

And the way to do that is to NURTURE me.

Your clients and your team are looking to you to lead them right now, and it will be easier to do that when you feel nurtured and taken care of yourself.

Here are ideas from what clients have shared and I have been doing:

    • Take that nap
    • Have a bath
    • Take a walk
    • Learn to do magic tricks
    • Crochet
    • Have that glass of wine
    • Have the cookie
    • Cook a wholesome meal

Nurturing is also going to help you feel safe. Which is so important in this time where your physical well being is at risk. Bringing in rituals that promote safety will reduce your stress levels

And when we’re less stressed – we do everything better.

The other question I’ve been asking myself is and been helping clients with too

Who do you want to become throughout the next few months?

This will be unique to every person. Right now, as the leader of your business, you have the choice to sink or swim. This crisis may highlight leadership qualities that you can strengthen.

Personally I want to become more resilient, I want to trust harder and deeper than ever before. I want to show up as a beacon of strength for clients, a source of support, kindness, and courage.

When you ask yourself this question, it allows you to focus on what you have to do to be that higher wiser version of yourself. It helps you to draw and call up your strengths vs feed into your weaknesses.

And when you can step into your highest level of leadership – it lights the way to what needs to be done, and how to get it done. It pulls you into action and forwards motion despite uncertainty.

And that’s what your business and your team need more than anything right now.

Both of these strategies will promote more ease in a time when ease is needed more than ever before.

I’m sending you lots of strength and courage and please know that you are more than welcome to reach out if you need help or support right now. I’m here to help ease this period of stress and overwhelm and build a stronger business than ever before.
