1 What does a business coach do?

A business coach is someone who works with entrepreneurs or senior leaders at a high level. They provide a sounding board for new ideas and ask lots of challenging questions so that you can get to the next level in your career, or your business.

It’s common to hire a business coach at moments of significant change or upheaval, or if you’re feeling ‘stuck’ and aren’t sure what your next move should be. These are all situations that business coaches are well versed at dealing with.

2 Who do business coaches work with?

Business coaches usually specialise in one particular area, which is related to their own background and expertise.

My own expertise lies in helping busy entrepreneurs with service-based entrepreneurs get to seven figures and beyond, but other coaches specialise in areas like eCommerce, or in Senior Management at large corporations.

3 What background do business coaches have?

Business coaches can come from all kinds of different backgrounds. Some will have been entrepreneurs all their lives, whereas others might have worked their way up the corporate ladder before turning their attention to helping others progress in their careers.

What sets me apart as a business coach is the fact that I’ve lived and worked in several different countries. I’ve worked on Wall Street and in London’s Financial district, before becoming an entrepreneur and running several of my own very successful businesses.

After leaving Wall Street, I built two award-winning businesses before realizing my true calling as a coach. I’ve been a business coach for over a decade already.

4 How is a business coach different from a life coach?

This can be confusing, as there can be a lot of overlap between business coaching and life coaching, especially if you run your own business. It’s hard to separate the two!

As a general rule though:

  • Business coaches focus specifically on challenges and opportunities within your business.

  • When working with a life coach, conversation can be more general and less business-focused.

I’m a business coach, so all sessions with me are regarding business challenges rather than personal ones.

Whenever I meet with a new potential client, before taking them on, I work with them to ascertain whether they need a business coach or a life coach, as I no longer take on life coaching clients – I just love the business side of things too much!

If we meet on an intro call and we figure out together that you’re more likely to need a life coach than a business coach, if there’s someone in my network who I think would be a good match for you, I would be very happy to provide a referral.

5 How does a business coach work with their clients?

Every business coach will have their own different and personal way of working with clients.

My own process goes something like this:

1.      We clarify your vision through a series of questionnaires and personality tests to understand how you operate and how to best position you to lead within your business.

2.     We build an action plan.

3.     We support your growth through a mix of bi-weekly or monthly calls, and text, email or Voxer (like voicemail) support between calls.

6 What does a day in the life of a business coach look like?

A normal client-facing day looks something like this:

8.30am Meditation/journalling

9am-1pm Clients

1pm Lunch

3:30pm Workout

4.30-5:30pm Wrap up work

During non-client weeks, I focus on marketing, social media, and sales calls to grow my business.
