Five Strategies to be a more effective CEO

Today’s, Savvy Business Show talks about taking a closer look at the 5 strategies that will help you lead your team with more ease.

My clients often come to me for help to lead their teams more effectively.

As the owner of your business, it’s important that you step up to be the leader. – claim that role. 

Why? Because when you don’t do this  – you confuse and frustrate your team.

Let’s dive in…


My clients and I look at this every single time the team is expanding or contracting. And we take it a step further making sure that everyone’s roles are clearly laid out.

When roles are defined it gives everyone clarity. And clarity  –  especially when lots of changes are happening, is a key for employees to feel safe and valued.

When people feel safe and valued they can focus better and thus be more effective.

1st  strategy: role definement

For strategies 2 – 5, I’m referencing the Four Agreements  – The Four Agreements: A Practical Guide to Personal Freedom is a self-help book by bestselling author Don Miguel Ruiz with Janet Mills.

The book offers a code of conduct based on ancient Toltec wisdom that advocates freedom from self-limiting beliefs that may cause suffering and limitation in a person’s life. – a really good book to read as a business owner.

Be impeccable with your speech

Don’t take anything personally

Don’t make assumptions

Always do your best.

Being impeccable with your speech:

My clients often have trouble with this one as they don’t want to insult their staff or come across as condescending.

Of course, you can mind your tone, but over-communicating is way better than under communicating for both you and your employee – the clearer you are and the more direction you give, the more confident they’ll feel.

They won’t have to guess what you want or what you meant.

Don’t take anything personally:

Keeping the focus on the facts and the tasks at hand is super essential when working with your employees. To help my clients take things less personally I often ask them: what does the BUSINESS need right now.

It’s easy to get your own ego wrapped up in your business and I have found that when I ask the question, what does your business need, my clients are able to separate themselves from their business and look at things more objectively.

I’m going to do a deeper dive into this in a future episode, but for today: just remember to not take things personally.

Don’t make assumptions:

“And if you insist on continuing to make assumptions about my character, I’ll advise you only this: assume you will always be wrong.”― Tahereh Mafi, Ignite Me

This applies to more than just someone’s character. When you continue to assume things – you’ll set yourself up for lots of disappointment and frustration – which of course can then lead you to take things personally.

So stop assuming and start communicating better.

Even if that means having difficult conversations, conversations don’t have to be difficult – because when you come to the conversation with the four agreements, you’re going to be able to have more powerful conversations with people that will help you lead better too.

Always try your best:

Knowing that you (and your employees) are always trying your best with what you got will allow you to let things go easier, to stop beating yourself up, judging/blaming others

So let’s do a quick summary:

  • Define roles clearly
  • Be impeccable with your speech
  • Don’t take anything personally
  • Don’t make assumptions
  • Always do your best
