Today on the Savvy Business Show, I’m talking with mastermind member Kayse Renfro of The Daily Maven. We are talking about steps you can take to hire the best virtual assistant for you and your business.

Usually, it’s a big life event or similar type moment – that you are like okay wait I need to help. There are so many areas of your business you can outsource. 

Start by getting clear on what you love and don’t love to do in your business. This will start to build a list of tasks or areas of your business that you can outsource and what type of person you are looking for.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • What is not getting done?
  • What daily tasks or projects are you not getting done?
  • If you could get to that one thing that you keep pushing off what would that look like in your business? 

While most Virtual Assistants are well versed in a lot of areas that doesn’t mean they enjoy doing everything. Ask the person you are talking with what they love doing most.

If you are looking for someone to help with social media, you may want to hire a social media manager specifically. You can always hire a VA on a project only bases.

When talking about one of the biggest reasons that a VA doesn’t work out is because of communication.

Communication is key to having a successful relationship. Set the clear expectation upfront.

A lot of business owners might find that they have a hard time to let go or learn what to delegate when they discover that they do need help. Kayse says, to start small when handing over the tasks or projects and just go from there. 

Let them take over that one piece and then grow it to the next thing and the next thing; pretty soon they will be well versed in your business and they will care for it like you do if you find a good person.

Creating a natural progression to expand that role and look at the things you don’t enjoy doing that someone might have a better skillset at doing or just free up your time to focus on other things in your business. 

Give your assistant the tools to set them up for success. Let them know exactly what you are looking for, how you want things done, etc.

It’s great to have them help you come up with better ways to do it but be honest and let them know your way first. They don’t just magically know what you want without them telling you. 

Remember a VA is task-oriented and takes on assigned specific projects to help a client achieve a defined outcome. An Online Business Manager works to help build strategy and manages projects from start to finish. 

Hiring help is not an expense, its an investment to spend more time with your family and the ability to spend more time doing the things you love.
