The fine line of vulnerability and oversharing as a business owner in a world that is obsessed with reality t.v. and being preached at to be more vulnerable.
Have you ever been so upset by something that you just immediately post about it and that left us your fans with a cliffhanger?
In a recent experience with someone, I was following for leadership and motivation out of the blue posted a photo of her crying her eyes out.
While I felt empathy for her because it was a rough time it was out of character for this person. And this person never followed up with something about how you could overcome or move forward.
It makes us feel really good when we posted like this because it gives us support and empathy from others and while you think its building trust its actually breaking their faith in your leading them.
It leaves your followers confused when they have followed you and looked up to you for inspiration and guidance. This is something that the researcher Brene Brown warned against.
My mom always said, “there is a time and place for everything”.
Take the time to process what you are experiencing and how you are feeling. How can this help others to know they aren’t alone and you lead them out of this place.
Please note: there is nothing wrong with posting you balling but when you are doing it at the moment you aren’t taking the time to process.
A few other ways you can build trust include:
- Bringing your authentic self to work.
- Say you’re sorry for your mistakes and take ownership of them.
- Let your employees help you.
